This work explores the area around Rendelsham Forest near Woodbridge in Suffolk. In the winter of 1980 it became the setting for one of the most famous encounters with UFO’s in history. In December of that year, over the course of 3 nights, numerous military personel, from the nearby airbase at Woodbridge, saw objects both in the air and on the ground. Some even reported seeing non-human entities. The story has become mired in extraodinary claims, counter claims, conspiracy, debate, argument and contested facts. Some skeptics said it was only the lights from Orfordness lighthouse a few miles away. But something doubtless did happen in the forest, but what, remains a complete mystery. Walking around the forest, I’ve been drawn to seek out ambiguous features that challenge perceptions.

Two redundant cold war airfields are found here, Woodbridge and Bentwaters. Both stored perhaps the largest amount of tactical nuclear weapons in Europe during the Cold War. A former secret military test site at nearby Orfordness was where it is claimed that an electronic high energy pulse weapon (Cobra Mist) was built and possibly tested. The land here has folkloric tales of wild creatures, supernatural events and some scholars even believe the story of Beowulf was written in the area.
